Notes for PLEASANT ALEXANDER CALHOUN:
Peasant Calhoun was nicknamed "Pless."
Pless and Delia moved from Pickens County, S.C. to Haywood County at Clyde. He later moved his family to Hazel Creek in Swain County, N.C.
Pless must have been a big hearted person, because he raised his grandson, Jack, the son of Sarah. He also raised two nephews, William Henry and Miles Thomas Calhoun. He had gone to Pickens, S.C. to check on the family of his brother, Miles, who
had been killed in the War. He found the boys, William 3 and Miles 2, alone. The best he could make out from the boys was that their mother had left with a man on a horse. It was later discovered that she left with a Union officer. It is still not
certain if it was by choice or not. After the War, she returned for the boys. Pless told her to go away and leave the boys be. If she had wanted them she should never have left them alone. She finally left never to be heard from again. But
according to Ella Calhoun Welch, she remembers her father saying his mother was from Haywood County.
He also raised Martin, Miles Thomas' son, and Alex, who was Tump's son. After Delia's sister, Katherine, became a widowed she moved in with Pless and Delia with her daughter, Sultana. Katherine later had two children by Pless.
Pless is buried in Fairview Cemetery, lot #60. His son W.O. is listed as next of kin.

60. THOMAS JOSHUA13 CALHOUN (JOHN JACKSON12, JOHN B.11, EZEKIEL10, EZEKIEL9, JAMES PATRICK8, ALEXANDER7, WILLIAM CAMPBELL6, ROBERT5 COLQUHOUN, ADAM4, ALEXANDER3, JOHN2, HUMPHRY1) was born November 23, 1850 in Abbeville County, S.C., and died March 03, 1927 in Bryson City, N.C.. He married SUSAN ADALINE CRISP October 16, 1873 in Swain County, N.C., daughter of JAMES CRISP and NANCY CAMPBELL.

Notes for THOMAS JOSHUA CALHOUN:
Josh was a Baptist Preacher who stood strongly against alchol and ran reverals. It is said he was very long winded and many people would sign when he go up to preach.
He had a childhood accident that left him lame. He had a mule named "Kit" that he taught to kneel so that he could mount and dismount without difficultly.
Joel Crisp, Justice of the Peace, married Thomas Joshua Calhoun and Susan Adeline Crisp at the home of her father, Pendleton Crisp. Vern Dossey, Marthey Calhoun and J. Hill Crisp.
Thomas Joshua Calhoun was a young man when he came to the North Carolina mountains outside of Bryson City. He had traveled across the mountains with his father and mother in the year of 1869. After his father established a general store and post
office in the community of Wayside, young Josh often helped him. But Josh's passion was exploring the surrounding mountains often hiking over the mountain to Hazel Creek. It was after he and Susan started their family that they pulled up stakes and
headed for the headwaters of Hazel Creek, here he felled trees to put together a two-room log cabin for his young family. Year later he would construct a large two story, six room house. This house still stands in Proctor the little community on the
mountain. In Josh's last will and testament he lists his property as beginning at a hemlock, Pink Martin's corner.
There is a story about how Josh, Billy Sawyer and John Jenkins went up the mountain to hunt bear and got caught in a snow strom. They built a lean-to and spent the night. Next morning, Josh found that the fire had burnt his boots. Billy Sawyer
cut the top out of his boots and made a pair of mocussins for Josh to wear home. This is how one of the branches of Hazel Creek is called Defeat. The other branch is called Desolation.
The nearest school being across the mountain in Wayside, Josh send his children to live with their grandparents for a education, something Josh believed to be essential. Later Josh was the power behind the force to bring education to Hazel Creek, in
the form of a one-room log school.
Josh also hewed out the first road up the mountain. It was his eye for the future that brought progress to Hazel Creek.

84. EMMA14 CALHOUN (JOHN PHILLIP13, JOHN JACKSON12, JOHN B.11, EZEKIEL10, EZEKIEL9, JAMES PATRICK8, ALEXANDER7, WILLIAM CAMPBELL6, ROBERT5 COLQUHOUN, ADAM4, ALEXANDER3, JOHN2, HUMPHRY1) was born April 1871 in South Carolina, and died 1910 in Barkers creek area Jackson County North Carolina. She married LINDSEY BUMGARNER August 03, 1891 in Sylva, son of JOHN BUMGARNER and CLERCIA PARKER.

Notes for EMMA CALHOUN:
According to the 1900 Census Emma and Lindsey had been married for 9 years and had 3 children 2 living. So it must be concluded that there was another child that was born and died that will be called in this report L.B. only because there is an L.B. buried next to Lindsey.

According to 1900 Census was born in South Carolina. At that time Her and Lindsey were living in Barkers Creek Township, Jackson County NC.

Emma's Family came to North Carolina from South Carolina in the Abbeville, Long Cane area according to their Family History. The family wealth that is spoken about in Her husbands notes may have came from Emma's Family because it is believed that many of the family members were Plantation owners some having one for summer and one for winter.

Notes for LINDSEY BUMGARNER:
The story has always been told as part of family folklore that when Lindsey Passed away that he left the family Fortune to two of his brothers to care for his children, however the more this Author researches the more that is is believed that the old story is not true at least not from Lindsey that is. It would be conceivably possible that an inheritance could have been realized from earlier in the Bumgarner history or possibly from Emma's Calhoun side of the family who were plantation owners and prominant politicaly inclined citizens.

Lindsey was a Machinist at the Pulp Mill ( Blackwood Lumber Company?) and is unlikely to have obtained a fortune from that job. The old story tells of the family being big land owners and owning their own Logging operation and my research has yet to be able to prove this. Census records list his occupation as stated above. Census Records also indicate no Real Estate Value at that time, unlike his Father John with a value of $100.00.

1870 Census indicate that a Lindsey was living with Rachel Raby and Dempsey Raby along with Phebe (Kilby, Bumgarner?), It is presumed that Henry had passed away between 1860 and 1870 Census periods. This cannot be the same Lindsey because he would have been 4 years old in 1870 and this Lindsey was 24 years old

At the time of the 1910 Census, Lindsey lived with his new wife Viola on Webster Road in Sylva Township, Jackson County NC.

Census Records also Indicate that Lindsey could both Read and Write.

Lindsey is Buried in Locust Field Cemetery next to Locust Field Baptist Church.

Children of EMMA CALHOUN and LINDSEY BUMGARNER are:
i. WALTER15 BUMGARNER, b. 1892, Barkers Creek area Jackson County North Carolina; m. MAMIE.

94. ii. SEYMOUR JAY BUMGARNER/BAUMGARTNER, b. May 1897, Barkers creek area Jackson County North Carolina; d. 1961, Jacksonville Florida.
iii. MAYE BUMGARNER, b. Aft. 1900.

Notes for MAYE BUMGARNER:
It is known that Maye did indeed marry and stayed in Asheville NC. and her husband was the president of the Builtmore Bank there.

1920 Swain County Census shows Maye living with Archibald F. and Grace L. Ray in the Charleston Township as their Niece. Her parents Lindsey and Emma Died 1912 and 1910 respectively.

iv. GILBERT BUMGARNER/BAUMGARTNER, b. Aft. 1900; m. MAYZE.

Notes for GILBERT BUMGARNER/BAUMGARTNER:
Gilbert like his brother was thought to have changed his name as well from Bumgarner to Baumgartner. Gilbert died in New Jersey about 1960.

v. L.B. BUMGARNER, b. Unknown.

Notes for L.B. BUMGARNER:
The actual name of this child is unknown and must have died between 1891 and 1900. The name LB is on a head stone in the grave yard next to Lindsey and it is assumed that it would have ment either Lindsey Bumgarner Jr. or Little Boy Bumgarner. One of those Bumgarner Mysteries!

He worked in the Jacksonville Ship Yard where he eventually lost his right arm and died a short time after that. Seymour was known to enjoy his Gin.

Seymour wanted to join the service when he was a teenager to help support is sibling's however he was not old enough (16 years old) so he lied about his age and joined the U.S. Army during WW1(Calvery). Also noteworthy is the fact that Seymour along with his brother Gilbert and appearantly his Uncle Fidell (Phidelle?) changed his name back to the correct spelling of their surname to Baumgartner.

Information gotten from Neil Baumgartner and his Family indicate that Seymour's Real name may have been John Seymour Baumgartner and that his Brother Gilbert was was actually Gilbert Jay Baumgartner however John F. Sr. remembers that his fathers name was Seymour Jay Baumgartner. But If Neil is correct then it could explain why his name could not be found in any social security number searches.

Notes for JAMES GILBERT BAUMGARTNER:
James or Jimmy as he was known was a very proud Marine and was an accomplished Ship worker like his father. Jimmy was also an expert Marx man.
John Jr. recalls times when Uncle Jimmy and his Father John Sr. would target practice using bottle caps nailed on a board with finishing nails and they would
shoot the nail out of the bottle cap with a 22 cal. leaving only one hole from 100 yards. John jr was also used a couple times to hold a lit cigarette and they would extinguish it with the 22 cal. Bullett.

John Jr also recalls a story that Uncle Jimmy told about being in a national Marx man championship that came down between himself and a Great grandson of Davy Crockett. Uncle Jimmy said that he felt that he won that match however no one wanted to discredit a name such as Crockett. Jimmy died young at the age of 42 in his home in Jacksonville Florida.
