| WHAT DREAMS MAY COME |
½
Whenever you review a film like this, you find yourself walking a very fine line where people can be offended easily. Since love stories require making a special connection with the characters involved, people are more sensitive when others criticize it. Far more than they would be over say an action or horror movie. They either think you didn’t get it, or in the more extreme, that you don’t have a heart! I myself truly do love stories like this, but this particular one just didn’t live up to its possibilities. WHAT DREAMS MAY COME is not a bad film; it’s just that the pieces never really gel together. The special effects are good and the fantasy elements are intriguing, but the story is uneventful. It sets itself on a particular plain of enjoyment early on and never rises above that. So rather than be stirred by the second half, I was kind of bored. Robin Williams does make long and passionate speeches that are well delivered and acted, but they never pack the emotional punch they should. And nothing is more disappointing than a movie with potential not using it. WHAT DREAMS MAY COME just feels too much like going through the motions and I wanted more than that.
I suspect that my comments here will elicit some strong feelings of disagreement and resentment from many of you, but I couldn’t lie about how I feel. You wouldn’t either (unless you were with a date...hehehe).
