Here it is! M. Night Shymalan’s very first follow up to his smash hit, THE SIXTH SENSE. This time, however, the sharks (i.e. critics) are circling. Reviewers for some reason are typically harshest towards a filmmaker on their sophomore effort, or whatever film they release after their initial success. While I won’t be as vicious as some, there’s ultimately no reason to be. At length, UNBREAKABLE is an interesting premise and rather good in parts. Although, as it unfolds, I’m not sure if Shymalan’s directing style was appropriate. (That’s an odd statement I know considering he wrote it.) The comic book angle was strange to begin with, but the overall pacing is just too slow. In fact, UNBREAKABLE is really boring throughout much of its duration. The last 25 minutes are almost enough to save it, because of how good it finally gets, but not quite unfortunately.
Even if UNBREAKABLE doesn’t make a splash, I wouldn’t worry because Night’s career is far from over. In this case, it was just the wrong stylistic choice. His talents though are clearly unquestionable and I’ve seen far worse films made by more A-list directors than this. So you can’t give up on him yet.
