THE TRUMAN SHOW

Star Star Star Star

Great! Spectacular! Highly inventive! All of these describe THE TRUMAN SHOW. It’s not the total departure for Jim Carrey that critics say it is, but he is good. Ed Harris should get an Academy Award for his performance. (He was nominated, but didn’t win.) Much of the humor is subtle too, but hilarious. The product placement jokes alone are hysterical, especially in light of movies like GODZILLA (1998) that have done just what they are making fun of.

This film is a classic example of how a preview can do more harm than good. There are worse examples sure, but knowing the plot of THE TRUMAN SHOW beforehand does take away some of the mystery. Especially since the plot’s construction depends on putting the audience in Truman’s position, confused and unaware of the truth. But if you’ve seen the preview, you already know what the secret is. And believe me, I’m not suggesting doing away with previews at all. Sometimes they are better than the actual movie. Plus, they’re the best way to get your film known. I just think the makers should be more conscientious in the future of how much of the plot they’re giving away. With THE TRUMAN SHOW, that is difficult. Still, it’s better to try. :)

The film ends a little too quickly, only needing another minute or so, but it’s no big deal. As is, THE TRUMAN SHOW is a fantastic movie and very much worth the effort to see.
