TREASURE PLANET

Star Star½

TREASURE PLANET is no dud. At least, it didn’t start out that way. The first half is pretty good, including a great sequence featuring the Johnny Rzeznik song, “I’m Still Here,” cementing nicely the surrogate father relationship between Jim and Silver. Everything was fine, until the introduction of B.E.N. that is. I’ve dubbed this the “Jar Jar” factor (kinda like Yoko), where a movie introduces a central character that’s so incredibly annoying, you wonder how any filmmaker could be so stupid. Combined with a dip in storyline, the reaching of Treasure Planet, the film inevitably loses you. Pity really, because Disney almost had another masterpiece. Not everything can be, of course, but this could’ve. Too bad!
