GENRE: Adventure / Horror
YEAR: 1990
RATED: PG-13
Giant worm-like creatures terrorize the inhabitants of a small town!!! Okay, I know what you’re thinking. That premise sounds too hokey to be good. Well, this movie is good. In fact, it’s a hoot! TREMORS is a great wild ride as our two heroes, Val and Earl, and the townspeople fight for their lives against the “Graboids,” as they are colorfully nicknamed. This movie is funny, scary, and action-packed. In fact, TREMORS is at times a great spoof of the horror/sci-fi genre. One classic scene illustrating this is when the townspeople are more concerned with naming the creatures than being eaten by them. And as Val says, “Walter, forget the damn name!” So often in movies like this, the characters are always more concerned with useless details than they are with the real picture, which is that they may die.
Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, who work very well together, play Val and Earl. Also in this movie is Michael Gross, the father from FAMILY TIES. His character is a die hard survivalist who, trust me, is a far departure from Alex P. Keaton’s dad.
