THE MUMMY

Star Star Star½

All in all, THE MUMMY ends up being an enjoyable and fun adventure. The first half, I grant you, is real up and down (with some rather silly dialogue), but the film does become solid with the resurrection of the mummy. In truth, the plot takes too long in getting us there and changes in the script would have rectified this. First and foremost, the back-story is executed all wrong, simply because they show us too much. The opening sequence should have been cut together more as rapid flashbacks, just so we get the idea. Besides, exposition is always more entertaining and interesting when it is discussed among the characters.

Brendan Fraser makes the movie and without him would have suffered greatly. He makes a good action/adventure hero. And not surprisingly, elements of this film will remind you of Indiana Jones, and Fraser would be a great twenty-something Indy if they ever decided to do another one. (Of course, how could you do one without Harrison Ford?) Best of all, this film never takes itself too seriously and injects a number of funny moments into the second half, with many of which coming from Fraser. :-)
