STAR TREK: Insurrection

Star Star Star

I’m pretty torn on this one. My biggest hang-up was deciding whether the good outweighed the bad. After long consideration, I think so. I’m giving INSURRECTION a 3 star rating, but as if it wasn’t evident already, it just barely made it. Michael Piller’s story is at its strongest in the middle and with revisions could have been fantastic. For about 20 minutes though, INSURRECTION is barely watchable. It does get better, but the space battles are a real let down, and they are usually STAR TREK’s strongest asset. Jonathan Frakes is an acceptable director, but I wonder what someone like Nicholas Meyer could have done with this. Since Meyer was at the helm of two of the greatest TREK movies (II and VI), I’m sure it would have been much.

Patrick Stewart is good as always and remains the best reason to continue seeing the TREK films. Since the next generation cast took over, the movies are gradually getting better. They’ve still got some climbing to do, but at least they’re in the right direction.
