STARSHIP TROOPERS

Star Star Star

Surprisingly, you do leave this movie entertained, even though there is a significant lack of focus within. In fact, the makers of this are lucky because that lack of focus almost ruined it on many occasions. One of the largest examples conveying this was that the movie could never decide whether it wanted to be an anti-war film or not. It jumped back and forth on this constantly, making it quite unnerving. I believe that these problems and more would have been alleviated if there had been a different director. Paul Verhoeven is always more concerned with shock value than he is with plot line. Remember folks, he’s the wonderful director who gave us those wonderful movies, TOTAL RECALL and SHOWGIRLS. And yes, I’m being sarcastic.

While there was a shower scene that was completely unnecessary, the excessive and graphic violence is what becomes too much. But without a doubt, the worst part of this movie (and most insulting too) is the fact that Verhoeven tries to be preachy. I’m sorry, but Paul Verhoeven giving lessons in morality is like Ted Bundy giving dating tips. And just when you think you’ve addressed every problem, more pop up in your head. For instance, the second half of this movie is much better than the first and proper development of a certain character is really lacking. Also, that the entire cast looks right out of BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 will make you roll your eyes a few times. With all this and more, I’ll bet you’re wondering how I still found any redeeming value in STARSHIP TROOPERS. Well, I did. The movie does hold your interest and will have you on the edge of your seat many times. It’s amazing, but you still have a good time despite all of the bad parts.
