SOUTH PARK: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Star

As much as I wanted to see this, I hate myself for having paid good money to do so. Best I can do now is warn people, so that they won’t make the same mistake I did. (I realize too that those who want to see this will do so anyway, regardless of what I put here). If you’ve seen any other of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s little jaunts into film, you’ll know why this movie, “Sucked Ass!” Some may find this hard to believe, but SOUTH PARK being on television is actually better. Having restrictions is what makes it so funny, because it forces them to come up with original comedy. Unfortunately, once you put them in a medium where there are no limitations, they usually wind up going too far. (In this case, way, way too far!) Hearing them cuss, frankly, is nowhere near as funny as when they are bleeped. And the attempt to make fun of animated musicals is cute at first, but ceased being so when they did it for the rest of the damn movie. With every new song, my teeth clenched tighter and tighter. In fact, if Cartman had come out during the credits and said, “Ha, Ha, you’re all a bunch of suckers,” I wouldn’t have been surprised.

Their final mistake - NOT ENOUGH CARTMAN! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Eric Cartman makes this show. So why would they make him so secondary in the movie? That alone is reason enough to hate this film, if there weren’t worse reasons already. It just stops being funny, plain and simple, and becomes boring and downright tedious. The laughter in my audience died down significantly from beginning to end. Oh sure, this’ll make millions at the box office, but so what, every bad movie can make the same claim nowadays.

Making SOUTH PARK into a movie simply took all the fun out of it. I wish their intention had been to take a funny TV show and make it into a funnier movie, but it wasn’t. The clear intention here was just to offend and offend as much as possible, because even the most jaded person would raise an eyebrow. And I guess this feature proves what scumbags Parker and Stone must really be. Their idiotic claim, or inference, to be champions of free speech is absurd and insulting. They just wanted the controversy because controversy means money. The more people complain about it, the more money it makes. God forbid they use their creativity and try to make a good comedy, huh? I don’t know about you, but I’d wage any single episode of the series up against this movie any day.

One final thought. I feel it necessary to point out that BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD never had to sink this low to be funny. Yet critics of the show’s humor blasted Mike Judge, the creator, repeatedly. And yet somehow SOUTH PARK, which is far worse content wise, gets a free ride. That doesn’t make sense to me.
