If any genre was crying out to be made fun of, it was clearly this one. Besides, poking fun at something that’s become tedious and generic so quickly is alone commendable. But for every time SCARY MOVIE hits the mark, it also misfires just as badly. Their first mistake was following SCREAM and others like it so exactingly, because it’s rarely funny watching the same scenes from other movies used over and over again.

      Honestly, SCARY MOVIE is sometimes so stupid, it’s funny, and then others so gross, it’s not funny. A sure sign of bad comedy is when they have to tell you, point blank, that a joke is coming. Frankly, I’m surprised that a master comedian like Keenen Ivory Wayans would resort to this. To be fair though, this is not always the case. There are some good gags mixed in with the utterly foul ones. In fact, had they used some restraint, even taste, they’d have had a much better movie. Nowadays, combining taste and comedy seems to be an oxymoron, but it’ll pass. Hey, I don’t mind sick humor, because it can be very funny. Just don’t overdo it and make it the centerpiece of your film, okay.

      BTW, in case you didn’t get it, SCARY MOVIE was supposed to be SCREAM’s original title. :-)
