REMEMBER THE TITANS

Star Star½

Just to remind everyone, September 2000 was an all time low for theater attendance. Movies were either so bad or so unappealing that people just weren’t interested. In previews, REMEMBER THE TITANS looked to be the breath of fresh air we all craved for. A great sports film with people triumphing over adversity is just what the doctor ordered. But rarely is one movie ever a total savior. And what ends up happening usually is a decent movie gets elevated to Godlike status (no pun intended) because of this lull. I think that’s what we have here.

Mainly, the script is pretty formulaic with no real surprises honestly. Formula is not always bad, but this simply fails to inspire like other sports movies have, but more on that later. (That it’s based on a true story is the only real credibility it has.) The plot simply never slows down enough to take a breath, hence the obvious Jerry Bruckheimer influence. The constant cutting is disappointing since pivotal scenes seem to end before they’ve even begun. And given that players feel the need to break into song every five minutes, hence the Disney angle, maybe this should’ve been called REMEMBER THE TITANS: The Musical. This was a little much and pretty cheesy actually. Yes, camaraderie is important, but these segments could’ve been more spread out, instead of just more of them.

While I hate using or inventing movie critic clichés, I honestly think few will remember REMEMBER THE TITANS. Overall, it doesn’t give you much of a reason. The feel good moments, mandatory in a movie like this, aren’t well balanced and are severely marginal. Actually, I was reminded of HOOSIERS during this and TITANS couldn’t compare really. HOOSIERS is a hundred times better and just simply more inspiring.
