GENRE: Comedy
YEAR: 1996
RATED: PG-13
For the uninitiated, here’s the premise of this show. A mad scientist (Dr. Forrester) has launched a man into space (Mike Nelson) and forcing him to watch the worst movies of all time. Why? Well, Dr. Forrester wants to rule the world and thinks the best way to do so is through bad movies. Once he finds one that can break Mike’s will, he’ll unleash it on the world. And so Mike doesn’t get lonely, he has his robot pals to keep him company. Gypsy operates the Satellite of Love, while Crow and Tom Servo join Mike in the theater. But rather than succumb to these bad films, Mike and the bots throw their witty banter right back at the screen. Basically, they make fun of how bad it is. The result is one of the funniest shows ever.
In 1996, a movie studio had the foresight and intelligence to let the gang from MST3K take their idea and make it into a feature film. This time around, the gang watches the 50’s feature, THIS ISLAND EARTH. In all respects, that movie was a classic of Sci-fi for the time, which is kind of sad. But hey, they’ve done worse flicks. The more I watch MST3K: THE MOVIE, the more it grows on me. Every time you see it, you always pick up on jokes that you didn’t before. This is truly one of the best comedies released in years.
