MATINEE

GENRE: Comedy
YEAR: 1993
RATED: PG

Set during the Cuban Missile Crisis, tempers are flared in the town of Key West, Florida where many think the end may be coming soon. What does Lawrence Woolsey say, “What a perfect time to open a new horror movie.” Woolsey, played by John Goodman, is clearly based on the antics of William Castle. Castle was a producer in the 50’s who spent more time adding gimmicks to his movies than actually making them good, as evidenced by Goodman’s character throughout.

MATINEE is also a coming of age story, not only for the country, but for the teenage characters involved as well. One of these characters is Gene, a young boy whose love of monster movies has him buzzing for the arrival of Woolsey. Gene and his family are especially affected by the Cuban blockade when his father is called to duty. I know what you’re thinking; this sounds just a little too serious, right? Really, it’s lighthearted fun that does incorporate a message or two but does it more from a human standpoint, rather than jamming it down your throat. MATINEE is mostly a reminder that going to the movies is and always should be a fun experience. If you agree, I highly recommend this one!
