| THE MAJESTIC |
½
While the ad campaign was short and sweet, it’s typically a bad sign, especially nowadays. And initially, THE MAJESTIC’s only drawback was in being too slow. Once the crux of the story kicks in, Jim Carrey losing his memory, it begins to settle nicely. However, the reason for his driving off keeps coming back, creating the movie’s biggest detractor. Needless reminding of how bad McCarthyism was is just that, especially when the film is too long anyway. So whenever the plot is distracted by anything having to do with outside of the town, the story loses its appeal and we lose interest.
Calling this “Capra-esque” is fitting, only striving so much to be that was their downfall. In trying to throw every Frank Capra like moment into the mix, it became too much. And by the time the ridiculous trial comes, you’ll be begging for it to end. Some moments were really heartfelt and emotional, but they all happen in the town. If it had just stayed there…
Numerous previews in a short period of time are continuing to be a definitive sign. It frequently means that a studio doesn’t have much faith in said film, therefore hitting the market hard and fast. Then hopefully, selling enough tickets in the opening weekend before word of mouth spreads or worse. As you can see, rarely does this work. Unfortunately for director Frank Darabont, he now has his first flop. But I have no doubts that he’ll recover, as will Jim Carrey.
