| JURASSIC PARK III |
½
First, did we even need another JURASSIC PARK movie? No, probably not, but like any successful franchise that’s overblown, they milk it till there’s nothing left. I mean, nothing! While I make no qualms about hating and despising THE LOST WORLD, this third installment had a decent premise behind it, if a tad absurd. But it never pans out, as each segment is merely an excuse to introduce one dinosaur after another. Behind the scenes, the original shooting script was thrown out literally weeks before filming was to begin, so they had to start over from scratch. They also began shooting without a clear and scripted ending. And sadly, even if you weren’t aware of these production facts, it didn’t matter. It’s so brazenly obvious, they slap you in the face anyway.
Despite technological improvements, the dinosaurs looked oddly cheesier, which tells me that even the studios had reservations and likely held back money and resources. I don’t fault director Joe Johnston really, because he wanted out from the get go, especially when the original script was dumped. But it probably would’ve meant career suicide if he had, so now he has to stand by it, no matter the response. What a double edge sword, in that you burn your bridges for not wanting to make a terrible movie, only to burn them anyway by making a terrible movie. Strange!
Bringing back Sam Neill was a good choice, although Jeff Goldblum is sorely missed. Having both together would always be better, but together or apart, no actor can save a pointless endeavor like this. Téa Leoni and William H. Macy are forced to play clichés, and in the worst way. All logic plot wise is soon out the door and you will be too.
