| GREAT EXPECTATIONS |
½Average fair. The only real enjoyment I got out of this film was probably the cinematography. Of course, you can have the best cinematography in the world and it won’t make up for or improve a lackluster script, which is this film’s biggest problem. Even without comparing it to the book, the movie on its own is still choppy and not very exciting. And the film does make the mistake of excluding some key factors from the novel, like Mrs. Havisham’s wedding dress. Those who have read it know what I mean. The dress is important because it not only shows her madness for never taking it off, but also represents her sorrow and age, as she and the dress grow older and older. The ending of the film is completely different too, and to change it just to have a happy conclusion was a bad decision. This is one of those rare occasions where I think the unhappy ending might have been better.
