½
Two words…character development! GET SOME!!! This is unfortunately what kills DEEP IMPACT in the end too. The script just never takes enough time to explore its characters properly. And when it does try, it does so only on the uninteresting ones. Téa Leoni is a complete waste of time, mainly because she doesn’t have a strong enough screen presence yet to be a lead. Her role would have more suited the likes of Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock. And while I like Elijah Wood, his character is pretty dull too, although not as bad as Leoni’s. The best characters, in fact, are those in supporting roles, especially the president (played Morgan Freeman). Others include Blair Underwood, Jon Favreau, Mary McCormack, Laura Innes, Maximilian Schell and the great Robert Duvall. So they had the talent, just not the vision to use them effectively. In essence, what the makers tried to do is put too much into one movie and it still wasn’t enough. And what you’re left with is pieces of a film instead of a complete whole.
Oh yeah, according to some friends of mine who like to examine the scientific accuracy of movies, just about everything in DEEP IMPACT is either wrong or implausible. :-)
