This is Carl Reiner’s salute to the golden age of cinema, specifically the detective genre. Steve Martin is Rigby Reardon, a classic private eye whose hired by Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward) to figure out who killed her father, a renowned scientist. Along the way, thanks to creative editing, Reardon meets up with some familiar faces from Hollywood’s golden age. But more than anything, the incredibly imaginative screenplay is what makes it all possible. To be able to take those old movies and splice them together, almost seamlessly, into a new plot is nothing short of brilliance. With the dawning of computer graphics, a sequel to this would be welcomed if they could invest the same amount of creativity and comic wit. If you’re looking for something different, try this out. Martin is in top form and will have you laughing out loud.
