CITY OF ANGELS

Star Star Star½

A charming little film that nicely and appropriately stays low-key and simple. Nicolas Cage is excellent and in top form as the angel, Seth. Dennis Franz and André Braugher are fantastic also in supporting roles, especially Franz. There’s even a delightful homage to Ernest Hemingway thrown into the mix, including a parallel of A FAREWELL TO ARMS. Not the whole movie is, mind you, just parts. The soundtrack is very good too, with songs by Sarah McLachlan, Peter Gabriel, Goo Goo Dolls and U2. Unfortunately, the Alanis Morrissette song received more promotion and it shouldn’t have. Her song pales in comparison to the others.

Of course, CITY OF ANGELS is by no means perfect. There are weak points scattered throughout and the ending is far too abrupt. But I still recommend this one though. It’s a nice movie and nice movies are rare these days.
