| BULWORTH |
½
To be honest, I resisted seeing this movie at every turn. It just didn’t appeal to me. Then one day, I had the choice between this and THE HORSE WHISPERER. When I asked the employees which one they preferred, they unanimously said BULWORTH. So I took their advice and for the most part, I’m glad I did. The first half of BULWORTH is absolutely fantastic. A few lines are just “fall out of your seat” hysterical. If it had maintained this momentum, BULWORTH would have been a 4 star movie for sure. But, (there’s always a “but,” huh?) I said if. The second half is just too disjointed and unfocused to be good. And the ending is really depressing not to mention unnecessary. I’d probably watch it again, but not beyond the first hour.
One thing that really irked me though was the excessive profanity. Believe me, I’m not one who shies away from movie violence or language, but BULWORTH goes way too far. In fact, the “F” word is used so many times that I think they set a record.
Warren Beatty has never overly impressed me, but I give him credit here. This was a good attempt, even though not a perfect one. BULWORTH is worth a trip to the movies, if there’s nothing better on the agenda.
