BRING IT ON

Star½

If you’re a guy seeing this, it’s impossible not to feel like a wuss, both before and afterwards. Yet, let’s be honest, a few teen movies in the last few years have been surprisingly good. And if this were too, I wouldn’t have to hold my head in shame, right? Unfortunately, in this case, I’m going to have to anyway. :-)

This movie genuinely had promise, if not for two existing problems. Setting aside that these are annoying cheerleaders, the comedy itself isn’t sharp enough. Scenes that should be funny are only mildly so, at best, and never beyond that. Disappointing also is the ending and outcome of the main competition, which reminded me of A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. I warn you, this is a spoiler, but it gets to the heart of the problem. Very simply, when the characters that you like have given their all to win and don’t, the audience feels cheated. Besides, who wants to see BRING IT ON and be reminded of real life? That argument is a null point here. And it doesn’t help either when the underdogs, who do win, aren’t very likeable. Since they’re consistently portrayed as bitchy and complainers, what is there to like? We’re never given the same insight into their practice or preparation, as we are the main characters. So in essence, we had little or no reason to even like or root for them.
