| BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY |

During a distinctly tepid movie season, above average films are usually praised overwhelmingly, and sometimes undeservingly. BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY almost fits that category because the raves it garnered were a trifle excessive, but were not wholly without merit either. The movie is in fact rather cute, although predictable at every turn. There isn’t one single surprise, yet you’ll find yourself enjoying nonetheless. It’s one of those few movies that’s still delightful regardless of the predictability.
Renée Zellweger is marvelous in the title role. Anytime an actor is willing to go the extra mile for their craft (her weight gain), the pay off is usually worth it. I liked the fact that they didn’t play to type in casting the love interests either. Usual nice guy Hugh Grant plays the jerk, and usual baddie Colin Firth plays the nice guy. Thank goodness, I was getting so tired of Firth being typecast too.
For a movie about the keeping of a diary, the artifact in question is rarely seen, nor is there much writing in one. I guess it’s implied. Ultimately, BRIDGET JONES is not spectacular and runs a little overboard in the final minutes, but I still recommend it. It does up being an enjoyable and entertaining little love story.
