| BOOGIE NIGHTS |
½
Deciding what to finally give this movie was a real headache. While I enjoyed a good portion of it, the film just doesn’t leave you fulfilled in the end. And I have to be honest; parts of this movie are downright sleazy and disgusting. One way you get around this though is by casting your film with well-liked actors and actresses. Because even if you don’t know their names, you know their faces well enough so that most will associate more with the actor rather than the character they are playing. It’s true.
Before going into this, I had heard that Burt Reynolds’ performance was very good. I’m happy to confirm that that report is true. Reynolds does a great a job and so does the rest of the cast. What did this movie in for me, among other things, is the ending. If you can get past the really unbelievable (even if only somewhat) happy ending, the last few minutes are the real screw up. The director, sadly, decided to incorporate a scene that was done only for shock value. It has its point, sure, but could have been filmed differently and still would have conveyed the same message. Those who say it couldn’t have, like the director, lack imagination. Frankly, we didn’t need to see it because what we imagined was far more significant and more important. So because of this stupid bit, the whole movie is almost ruined, if not completely, because of it.
BOOGIE NIGHTS will most assuredly be hailed as a critical masterpiece for the next few years. And there’s no denying that it is an entertaining and sometimes excellent film, but it’s flawed too. I just don’t understand how all these other critics can ignore that.
