From a technical standpoint, ANTZ is a masterpiece. The computer animation is beyond description, especially for its detail. Personally, I was impressed by the realistic facial expressions most. But to think that computers might one day become so good that distinguishing between what’s real and what’s not will be impossible…is pretty scary.
The voices are good and the talent they got to fill them is staggering. What’s funny is that Stallone, even though really him, still sounds like an impression of himself. But you have to give them credit, what other movie would ever have Sylvester Stallone paired up with Woody Allen? Now that’s original! (On a side note, they were together briefly once before in one of Allen’s older films, where Stallone plays a street hood.)
With that said, here are the detractors. Mainly, the story is pretty up and down. It goes from average to good and back to average again. Yes, I freely admit that I must sound like a broken record sometimes when I make these comments. But if plot and story is what plagues the majority of movies these days, then you have to point it out. ANTZ is still pretty cute though and, of course, it’s a good one to take the kids too. :-)
