Essentially, this is SPINAL TAP for the movies. AND GOD SPOKE is a mock documentary of director Clive Walton and producer Marvin Handleman’s first big-budgeted film ever…an epic retelling of the bible. Of course, their films previous to this were nothing but low-budget cheese and skin flicks. So it becomes apparent rather quickly that neither one of them is competent enough to handle such a project. And despite their obvious good intentions, the production is hilariously doomed from the start. Saddest (or funniest) of all is their approach, in how they treat the bible like it was some Jackie Collins book. In fact, their slight appreciation for the subject matter when it does surface is comical at best, which is the point. Classic scenes include the filming of Jesus “walking on H²0 stuff,” when no one can remember how many apostles he had. The only consensus is that there were “more than eight.” Like SPINAL TAP, the humor is very subtle, but it’s great. This movie is a pure jewel and one of my favorites. Great cameos include Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk) as Cain, Eve Plumb (Jan from the Brady Bunch) as Mrs. Noah and Soupy Sales as Moses!?
NOTE: The director of this film, Arthur Borman, has seen this page and was kind of enough to provide a link from his site to my own. His parting comments in an E-mail message to me were, “Thanks for the kind words about my film.” And as you might guess, I was totally beside myself. If you would like to visit Mr. Borman’s page, just click on his name below. And if that weren’t cool enough, I was lucky to hear from the screenwriter too, Michael Curtis. Here’s the awesome E-mail he sent me:
Well, if Arthur Borman gets such kudos for writing in, I guess I will too! Thanks for the great review of the film. When it first came out I thought no one had seen it, but every time I mention it to people, they all say “oh my god, that’s one of my favorite movies!” The same time “…And God Spoke” was released, Greg Malins and I started writing for “Friends,” (the TV show). 4 years later, we were the Executive Producers (along with Adam Chase). I left the show after the fifth (or “best”) season, and Greg stayed on for a couple more years. We’re both currently plowing our separate ways through the TV business, with occasional forays back into movies (rewrites of “Lethal Weapon IV” and “House on Haunted Hill.”) Again, thanks for the great review!
Thank you, Mr. Curtis!
