½
First of all, this movie is way too long, about 30 minutes too long to be precise. What’s unfortunate is that it’s this half-hour that does the movie in. So what started out as a good film just ended up being your typical, cliché action flick. Another problem is that the makers relied far too heavily on Computer Graphics for their special effects. While I do believe that CG is the best thing going these days, I do not think that it should be used for everything. Take, for example, JUMANJI. Just look at how fake the animals in that movie were and you’ll know what I mean. However, despite all of this, Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman are still able to shine and turn in great performances. In fact, the acting from the rest of the cast is pretty good too, except for the ones who played the President’s wife and daughter. Honestly, I couldn’t figure out if it was their dialogue that stunk or just them. You be the judge! Two actors I really like, William H. Macy and Jürgen Prochnow, are in this also. The only problem is that they weren’t used effectively. Macy’s part is too small and Prochnow doesn’t even have any lines. How can you use a great actor like him and not give him any lines?
Director Wolfgang Peterson initially had a good film here, but he ended up giving us the same thing that almost every other action movie does…NOT MUCH!
