ADAPTATION. is a real conundrum. By the closing stretch, the film does become its own antithesis and embraces the very notion that it railed against - cheating the audience. And I swear, rarely has a film been so clever and then so stupid at the same time. Brian Cox’s character was right though, the ending does make the film. Just don’t insult your viewers. But that’s what this film does, dissolving from a quirky comedy into a seedy joke. Not a joke that’s funny either, just sad, and in a pathetic way. Meryl Streep’s character becoming a drug addicted murderer is too ridiculous for words. It’s preposterous and a total cheat.
Yes, I got it! All the metaphors, all the symbolism, I got it. A film about the film business, making fun of all the intricacies and quirks is interesting. But I’m reminded of a similar movie, WAG THE DOG, which was funny in a similar vain, but then turned serious and destroyed all credibility. No difference here!
