THIRTEEN DAYS

Star Star Star Star

Right off, you’ll probably find Kevin Costner’s accent annoying, although whether it’s him or the accent itself is your choice. Thankfully, he held back on it as the film progressed. The acting is superb though with Bruce Greenwood delivering an OSCAR worthy performance as Kennedy. He retains his humanity without it being a simple impression, and is outstanding. As for the plot, the only real downside is the simplistic reuse of an old cliché. The military generals, as usual, are portrayed as warmongers bent on destroying anything and everyone just because it pleases them. Hey, I don’t doubt that they exist, but it seems rather stereotypical to label them all this way. In fairness though, THIRTEEN DAYS doesn’t go overboard and portray them as cliché as most. Those in opposition simply believe that they have the better plan. But movies like this always have history on their side. We know how it all came out, and whose way worked, so anyone who suggests differently is seen as more than wrong, but as almost diabolically evil. I’ve always found this approach slightly juvenile, but it’s not so bad here.

THIRTEEN DAYS is a little drawn out, but gripping enough to keep you on edge and is thoroughly suspenseful for a historical drama. However accurate it may be though is probably questionable, but it’s still good entertainment.
