Warrant Officer

Military Occupational Specialty Page

The Military Occupational Specialty Code (MOSC) consists of 9 characters (letters and numbers). Here's what each one stands for:

1st & 2nd Characters - Numbers that represent the branch or functional area.

3rd Character - Number which designates the area of concentration (AOC).

4th Character - Letter used to designate separately definable qualifications within an AOC because of major systems or skill differences.

5th Character - Number or letter that designates a Special Qualification Identifier (SQI), which is generally obtained from formal school training. When no SQI applies to the MOS, a 0 (zero) is recorded in the 5th character position.

6th & 7th Characters - Letter and number combinations that designate an Additional Skill Identifier (ASI), which relates a specific skill or piece of equipment to an MOSC.

8th & 9th Characters - Letter and number combinations that designate another ASI or a Language Identification Code (LIC).

Most soldiers have an MOSC that consists of at least the first 5 characters, but, may have up to all nine, depending on their additional training. For example, my MOSC is 918B8P6, and here's what the parts stand for:

91 - Ordnance Branch

8 - Electronics Systems (AOC)

B - Maintenance

8 - Instructor (SQI)

6P - Master Fitness Trainer (ASI)
