The military loves to use acronyms and jargon for everything it does. This is an incomplete list of some Army words; (it's impossible to ever have a complete list - new acronyms are invented every waking moment!). I've listed the good, the bad and the ugly. No need to view everything through rose colored glasses. The Army is a mixture of many things.
Probably one of the best known Army words is "Hooah!" (pronounced who-ah, or who-uh). This word is usually shouted or grunted by motivated soldiers. It's general meaning is "Yes", "OK", "I agree with you", "Awesome" or any other concurring comment. Oftentimes, a group of soldiers will offer up the "Hooah" response when they are acknowledged for a job well done, or to express their happiness when told that things have gone exceptionally well and they are proud of their accomplishments.
Other jargon:
Ate up, All Ate Up With It (or some similar variant) - This describes a trooper who, despite motivation and desire, just can't seem to get things right. A typical scenario might be this: "Hey did you hear that Private Snuffy lost his M-16 firing pin again?" 'Yeah, he's All Ate Up With It.' "
Squared Away - This is a description of a soldier who always looks sharp, knows his job exceptionally well and is always on top of things.
Newbie - This describes a fresh soldier just arriving into your unit.
Short - When a soldier's enlistment contract is near expiration, and he's destined to be a civilian soon, often you'll hear troops yelling "SHORT!" to their buddies. The "Short soldier" becomes a "Single Digit Midget" when he has only 9 days left in service.
High Speed, Low Drag - Another way to describe an awesome performing soldier, a cool situation or a kick-ass weapons system, such as "Mr. Yakel is high speed", or "That M-1A1 tank is one high speed mutha..."
Butter Bar - The friendly description for a newly minted, no-time-in-grade, wet-behind-the-ears, newbie Second Lieutenant.
Shammer, Shamming - This describes a trooper who has the unique ability to avoid work, or get away with doing as little as possible. "PVT Gump is the biggest shammer I know", or "He's shamming again".
ODF (Out 'dare Flappin') - This term indicates that you have no clue; no idea as to what's going on in a particular situation. "Private Bolo, explain the correct sequence for emplacing the M-18 Claymore mine." "Sergeant Knowitall, I need retraining on this subject, 'cause I'm ODF".
SOS (SH*T on a Shingle) - This is the soldiers description of Creamed Beef on Toast, which is a regular breakfast offering at the dining facility (Mess Hall). While the acronym may conjure up images of a ghastly, repulsive, inedible defecated roofing tile, it's actually pretty good stuff, and plenty of soldiers love it for chow each morning.
Box of Rocks - Uncomplimentary description for an Ate Up soldier, who manages to repeatedly do stupid things. Such a troop may be described as "...dumber than a box of rocks".
Drive On! - Encouragement and acknowledgment for your troops to let them know that they're doing the right thing, and to keep them on the right track. "Sergeant Spitshine, how is my PMCS procedure going?" " It looks fine Private Greenhorn, drive on."
FUBAR (F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition) - Sometimes things go wrong...and sometimes things REALLY go wrong...when they're that bad, they're FUBAR. This acronym goes back to at least W.W.II, but things went FUBAR long before we had a name for it.
REMF (Rear Echelon Mother F**ker) - Know any armchair quarterbacks? REMF's are those guys who are NOT out front, in the trenches. They either stay in the rear, out of harm's way, due to circumstances beyond their control, OR, they work the system to their advantage, to stay in the comfort zone, behind the line units.
SNAFU (Situation Normal, All F**ked Up) - Again, like FUBAR, there are major SNAFU's, and minor ones. Problems occur, s**t happens, etc. That's a SNAFU.
TARFU (Things Are Really F**ked Up) - When it's gotten soo bad, that it can't get any worse...
WETSU (We Eat This Sh*t Up) - Oftentimes, soldiers are hooah about something they are doing. When a Drill Sergeant or NCO happens to ask about their motivation level, the soldiers might reply with a "WETSU". This may be in unison, or the sounding off of one soldiers' "WETSU" may have a ripple effect, spurring other soldiers in the proximity to let out a boisterous "WETSU" of their own.
US ARMY (Uncle Sam Ain't Released Me Yet) - Troops looking to finish their enlistment's would sometimes tap the "US ARMY" tag on their utility uniforms and lament that "Uncle" still had them for awhile.
Dead Wood - References a trooper who doesn't pull his share and is not motivated to perform.
SWAG - Scientific Wild Ass Guess - When you just don't know, or need to come up with a possible solution to some problem, oftentimes, one needs to SWAG the answer. Go ahead, give it a try.
ROAD (Retired On Active Duty) - This name is a derogatory description of a non-motivated soldier who is just passing the time and doing the minimum in order to retire. Often referred to as a "ROAD Soldier". This type of a soldier is definitely "Dead Wood", as well.
FTA (Fun, Travel and Adventure...Also, F**K The Army) - The first acronym refers to Army life in general. The second acronym is certainly a non-flattering opinion of the Army, possibly due to the conditions that Army life sometimes imposes on soldiers. I've found the "Fun..." acronym to be the one I refer to most often, based upon personal experiences.
The following are some names associated with personnel from the Armed Services. The nicknames are listed with no intent to defame or insult the individuals of the services. These just happen to be slang, as much of the other jargon on this page is presented. There is some degree of rivalry between each of the services, which has probably contributed to the nicknames attached to them. I have a deep respect for all soldiers, sailors and airmen, regardless.
WINGNUT - This is a name for an Air Force guy.
ZOOMIE - This is another name for a Wingnut.
SQUID - Name for a Navy guy.
JARHEAD - Common reference to Marines, though not necessarily a complimentary term. (My father was a Marine in W.W.II, South Pacific).
GRUNT - The name other services refer to us Army troopers as.
WEEKEND WARRIORS - An Active Duty reference to reserve troops, who used to drill mainly on weekends. This reference is not generally regarded as a compliment, and does not apply to today's reserve components. Reserve duty is no longer a "1-weekend per month, 2 weeks active per year" part-time job. Many of today's military missions are supported and operated by reserve components soldiers working seamlessly with their Active Duty counterparts. In fact, the active duty force must depend on the reserve components to perform and sustain the operational tempo of today's missions. In short, we're all part of the same team, and we rely on each other to get the job done.
