Dr. Von Newman was a world renowned arachnologist. Pondering how to
best utilize his superior talent, he decided to make
a trip to the Marshall Islands in order to study the long term affect of radiation on
arachnids. The fascinating thing about the Marshall Islands, aside
from the fact that the US used these islands to perform nuclear tests
starting in 1946, there is much debate over which spiders are actually
indigenous to these islands. Various spiders have actually floated
from island to island on their own rafts crafted from webbing. This
just made it more interesting since Dr. Von Newman thought that perhaps the
radiation would act like the ID tags used to track birds and animals.
He just might be able to establish some sort of "migration pattern" of the
spiders and, therefore, solve at least some of the mysteries regarding
arachnids in this part of the world. The two species of arachnid that
the doctor was interested in were the Argiope and Cyrtophora,
each of which are hearty and seemed to be thriving on the islands.
Once he reached Enewetak Atoll, it took the
doctor and his team only one day to find their quarry. In fact, they found
their leggy friends in such abundance that they had to use walking sticks to
clear the webs out of their way as they went along. Von Newman marveled at
how strong the webbing actually was.
After the second day, the Doctor realized something. The farther in they
went, the larger the spiders were! In fact, he and his team already
found a couple of samples that were twice larger than considered normal.
This so captured the attention of the Doctor, that he didn't even notice
that one by one, his team members were disappearing the further into the
atoll they went until he came upon the base of a hill.
Von Newman called out to his team mates. There was no response.
Not willing to wait around for them, he ascended the hill. Since the
Doctor spent too much time studying arachnids and not enough time at the
movies, he did not know enough to heed the music in the background that was
building with every step he took. Then with a crescendo, the Doctor peered
over the top and saw the largest, blackest, ickiest spider in the world!
It's body measuring 10 feet long...and those legs! They seemed to go
on for ever.
Screaming like a little school girl, Dr. Von Newman tore down the hill,
batting and slashing anything in front of him. He must have run full
tilt for an hour. Panting like a dog, the Doctor had to stop; he
needed to rest. He looked around and saw a log on the other side of a
small clearing. It looked like a good place to sit down. As Von
Newman stepped into the clearing, the brush underneath his foot gave way,
and the doctor went tumbling into a pit. It was no clearing at all!
Litter from the forest simply clung and concealed the web underneath!
Desperately the Doctor began pulling the web from him, but it was too late.
Tens of spiders, all about a foot long, descended upon him, biting him all
over his body.
When Von Newman awoke, he felt...different. He was encased in some
sort of cocoon. While amazed that he was still alive, he did not seem
to possess the fear he previously had. Effortlessly, he emerged from the cocoon.
He felt something...hunger. But it was different. The doctor
then felt a vibration and moments later, heard a voice. It was one of
his team members. With speed that would have surprised him under
normal circumstances, Von Newman crawled out of the pit and greeted his
teammate. It was now the teammate's turn to scream like a little
school girl. Before either of them realized it, Von Newman seized his
comrade and began sucking the blood from him. Within 30 seconds, his
one-time companion was as dry as a bone. Satiated, Von Newman realized
that he was no longer a mere man. He was
Spyder Man!!
