Joey "Rocco" DiPensa was born into a hardworking, but poor family who
immigrated from Italy. While his parents understood the value of
making a life for yourself and your family, Joey saw things in a slightly
different way. He couldn't understand why people like his parents had
to work so hard for so little. When he asked his father about this,
his father replied, "Hey
Giuseppe, we worka this hard to make-a better life for you. Then you worka
hard to make a better life-a for your family." But Joey wanted more for
his parents and wasn't interested in working a lifetime when his parents
would not be around to enjoy it. So Joey started to look into
alternative employment opportunities.
While Megopolous had its criminal element, as every large city does, Joey
realized that it was made up of small-time, disorganized little groups; they
were nothing but a bunch of thugs. Seizing upon this knowledge, Joey
decided he was going to organize the groups. He created a new persona
for himself who he called Rocco. Rocco would deal with the criminal
element and Joey would remain the loving son. Rocco got right to work.
As a personal joke to himself, he called his new group The Thugs. His
organization began grow, and soon, many of the smaller groups were falling
in line with Rocco, since he would occasionally make examples of those who
did not. The Thugs took on larger and larger heists and found new ways
of extorting money from the local businesses. Rocco had become rich
and powerful.
Soon, Joey decided it was time to give his parents all of the things that
they deserve: a new home, luxury cars with a personal driver, a wait staff
and many other gifts. His parents were stunned. His father asked,
"Giuseppe, how could you afforda this?" To which Joey replied, "I
worked hard just like you said." But Joey's father was no fool.
Outraged, he said, "No Giuseppe! No! Others have worked hard for
this, not you! We will nota have any of this!" After a moment,
Joey's father, holding his weeping wife, said, "You are nota the son we
raised." It was at this point when Rocco emerged.
Incensed, Rocco asked one question; a question that has since been
uttered countless times on countless gangster and police shows, "Do you know
who you're talk'n to?" Rocco then viciously beat Joey's parents to
death. In doing so, he effectively killed Joey as well. No one
was going to stop Rocco and they most certainly were not going to talk down
to him.
It was immediately after this event that Rocco began arms running and
started funding certain organizations that the FBI and CIA had their eyes
on. Rocco wanted to grow. He wanted to be important. He wanted
to make history. He saw his new connections as a way to achieve all of
this. Only time will tell if he succeeds.
