Muncho is, in short, a clown gone horribly,
horribly wrong. Reminiscent of
the Joker, he is a tragic comic figure in the American superhero scene.
His warped and twisted mind is the result of years and years amongst circus
folk. Already perched on the precarious abyss of sanity, his lifeline to a
normal life snapped when he witnessed a band of overly-competitive Gypsy
entertainers burning down the Big Top. He ran after them, catching them
one by one and incapacitating them until the authorities arrived. Police
on the scene found one gypsy bound with a knotted snake from the Reptile
Pit. Another had been nearly asphyxiated with shavings from the Bearded
Lady, which Muncho had been idly collecting for months. All were
profoundly and utterly in a state of shock. And so began Muncho's quest to
purge the world of criminals and, ironically, the freakish miscreants he
simply refers to as "Carneys". It is clear from psychological profiles
that he makes some arbitrary distinction between entertainers of worth -
street performers, clowns, puppeteers, and the like - and carneys - freaks,
anomalies, geeks, and the freakishly super powered who use their talents for
evil.
He spent many months after his trauma studying with the Grand Mystiquamodo,
the circus magician. He finally perfected the art of creating his juggling
balls out of thin air, and bestowing them with properties useful in his
fight against crime - sleeping gas, fire, explosions, shrapnel, etc.
Additionally, he keeps his deck of magic cards handy, ready to toss at his
opponents one by one with unforeseen results. He is constantly
characterized by his macabre sense of humor, his acrobatic antics during
combat., and a tantalizing love affair with the ideas of fate and chance.
Plus, any opportunity for a bad joke, a one liner, or a pun is met with
exuberant enthusiasm, particularly during his battles.
Is Muncho a guardian of the law, whose sad circumstances deserve the pity
of all? Or is he a certifiable lunatic, whose vigilantism is merely a
blind behind which he hides his own particular breed of mayhem and chaos?
That distinction is often left in the hands of his victims or beneficiaries
... however, all are in agreement on one thing:
This is one creepy-weird f'ing superhero.
