Dr. Newt Komodo was a famed and well-respected reptile researcher who
spent much of his time in the Amazon Basin, amongst the lizards and reptiles
he loved so much. In an unlikely but ultimately ironic mishap, his
trusted native Peruvian apprentice Elizabeth Erda accidentally knocked the
good doctor out of their outrigger canoe into the midst of a crocodilian
feeding frenzy. Although Liz managed to pull Dr. Komodo out of the water
before the savage beasts had finished him off, he was badly mauled and looked
sure to die. Liz, her love for the Dr. Komodo far surpassing the
adulation between apprentice and master, rowed his failing body further into
the Amazon, finally reaching the northern reaches of her native land.
Amongst the ruins of a hidden Mayan city, she found what she had been
seeking; the temple wherein Mayan priests could perform their blood magik,
which could nurse life as easily as it could quench it. Laying the mauled
form of Dr. Komodo on the altar, she lit the sconces and began filling the
temple with an acrid and pungent smoke, which seemed to make the very vines
creeping throughout the ancient ruins sway and move of their own volition.
She then spent hour upon hour spilling the blood of animal sacrifices,
while chanting the ancient incantations which could summon the healing touch
of the Elder Gods.
After several hours of ceaseless chanting, and
having not slept for two days in her frantic flight up the Amazon, Liz
finally nodded off, leaving the blood magik ritual unfinished. While she
slept, several alligators from the river crept into the temple, following the
scent of the sacrificed animals and the failing body of Dr. Komodo The Elder
Gods, obeying Liz's summons, interpreted the scene as one of the ancient
animagic rites, wherein a man was offered to be an earthly vessel for the
Gods' use. The Scaled God took Dr. Komodo and imbued him with his essence,
making him into a man-lizard hybrid.
Several hours later, the smoke
long since dissipated, Liz Erda awoke to find her mentor lying asleep on the
altar, no longer bleeding or injured. But what had happened? Where once
there was soft, smooth flesh, hard rocky scales now lay. Delicate hands were
now thick muscular utensils tipped with razor sharp claws. And where once
had been the most divine manly derriere there was now a thick, long tail,
which draped over the edge of the altar and reached to the floor. Liz
screamed, awakening the doctor. Sweating feverishly from vividly horrible
dreams of terrible things being done to him, he leapt to his feet in a
semi-dream state, and struck at his perceived assailant. Moments later, he
saw his sweet student, her neck crooked, on the floor, and realized slowly
that it had been his hand that had done it to her. Looking down into his
hands, the full horror of what he now was came to him. He ran from the
temple and into the woods. Only after weeks of soul-searching and
self-discovery was he able to arrive at the inescapable conclusion: he would
never again be welcome in the rank and file of humanity, but he would
nevertheless spend his life trying to atone for the act of ending the life of
his treasured love, Elizabeth Erda. He worked his way north through
Central America, finally settling in the sewers of Megopolous, and
coming out to fight crime with superhuman prowess as .... IGUANAMON.
