Land of the South

THE STORY

By Joe Comeau

In the southern regions of the world, the sun shines brightly upon the land.  It has been said that the north was once as warm and brightly lit as the south, but the ice contained within the hearts of the peoples there overpowered even the Sun.  While the North uses terms like "hard" and "harsh" to describe themselves, people of the South use terms like "warm" and "radiant."

Believed to be amongst the oldest lands of the world, Draak has seen the rise and fall of many races throughout the millennia.  Its favorite children are said to be the dragons who have existed since the time of the Anasazi.  Long lived, dragons carry with them the teachings of many generations and an understanding most other races cannot possess.  While dragons are smart and powerful, they have an odd respect for smaller creatures, especially the humans who seem to lead such fleeting lives.

Dragons live in a hierarchical society, the largest, and youngest, portion being Dragon Soldiers who service the community in virtually every way.  After serving for a time, usually around three hundred years, some Dragon Soldiers become Dragon Heroes.  It is at this point a dragon may begin schooling in the ways of magic.  Those Dragon Heroes who show particular prowess in magic and skill at reasoning may eventually be elevated to the status of Dragon Mage.  At the top of the pyramid, there is a single, vastly wise and ancient dragon called the Dragon Lord.  The youngest of Dragon Lords was said to be a mere eight centuries, fifty years of age.  It is not uncommon for a Dragon Lord to live to be one millennia, two centuries before joining their ancestors in the Dragon's Realm.

While dragons are the prominent race of Draak, it is home to many other races and species of creatures such as Dragonflies who are said to have come into the world by union of dragon and human.  Dragonwolves, are said to be a dragon's best friend and are often found throughout Draak.  And, as it is true in all other parts of the known world, humans also live and thrive in Draak, an essential part of the kingdom.

Deciding to march upon Ancient's Keep was a difficult decision for the Dragon Lord.  Unwilling to send others to do this difficult task, he himself decided to  lead the army into battle and has vowed to bring light back into the world.
