- PURPOSE
To foster interest in, knowledge about, and scientific appreciation of the fields of: Gemology, Mineralogy, Geology, Anthropology, Paleontology, and related branches of the Earth Sciences.
- HISTORY
In 1953, Mr. Dale Hayes, an ardent rockhound, held meetings in his home - his goal being to establish a rock club in Springfield. In February of the following year, the organization was formed, a constitution was drawn up, and officers were elected. Dr. Carlton Condit, then Curator of Geology at the Illinois State Museum, acted as chair of the first meeting. The charter for the club was officially issued in March of 1954, and the club became affiliated with the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies in May of 1954. Meetings were held on the second floor of the Illinois State Museum.- OFFICERS
