Ham Radio Outlet - Anaheim, CA - Burns to the Ground, Fire Sale at TRW Swap Meet

From the HRO web page, http://www.hamradio.com/:

"Early Sunday morning, January 23rd, 2000 a major fire raged through the shopping center where the Anaheim, Ca. Ham Radio Outlet store was located.  The fire, which originated in a neighboring store, resulted in the complete loss of the HRO Anaheim location.  For the next two weeks the 800 line and the local phone number for Anaheim, CA will be redirected to the Burbank, Ca. store.  Personnel from Anaheim will relocate to the Burbank store temporarily.  While arrangements have been made to re-open as soon as possible, the specific schedule is unknown at this time.  Rest assured however, that HRO Anaheim will be up and running just as quickly as humanly possible."

Even though the store was written off as a total loss, some of the merchandise inside survived.  How much?  Lots!  Apparently, the roof of the building collapsed protecting some boxes of merchandise.  The HRO people were back in business one last time at the TRW swap meet in Manhattan Beach on the following Saturday.   Everything that was still usable was being sold out of the back of a rental van for at least 50% off.  No Warranty -- Cash Only -- As Is.

I was able to pick up this ICOM IC-2800 for $275.  The only drawback was that the box was missing (probably badly burned), the manual was wet and wrinkled, and the mounting screws were missing.  The radio survived untouched in its plastic bag.  As an added bonus, the radio smells like smoke!  The radio and its accessories were handed to me in a Ralph's shopping bag!

Additionally, I purchased a brand new Uniden Bearcat BC895XLT for $110, less box, manual and power supply.  Smoke included.

Doug also picked up an ICOM IC-2800 for $250 in excellent condition with the exception that the power cord on the back of the radio was burned.  The radio itself is flawless.  As well, he purchased a BC895XLT for the same price, but his smells worse -- fire smell included!

Half of the building survived, half didn't.  Only the south half of the strip mall where HRO was located burned.  The north half is still in business.  It looks like HRO will be moving into an empty unit in the north half and will be open before long.
