Orchid #9 - Dendrobium: Notes & Observations - continued

Notes & Observations - 1/26/01 - 6/30/01

Spike Detail 07/01spike 07/017/8/01: Photographed spike growth.

7/19/01: Spike now approximately 9" long with 7 visible buds. The stalk on the opposite end of the plant has begun growing as well. and has pushed up about 2" with leaves.

7/23/01: Spike 12" with 5 distinct buds approximately 3/4" large, and other smaller buds iin evidence. Another 1" of growth on the other end.

Spike & Buds8/6/01: Spike now 18" long with 9 distinct buds. The other end has grown to 4", and a tiny spike has appeared with a single bud on it.

8/10/01: 1st bud opening. These things are a deep, deep purple color. I was actually expecting white. Spike has not grown, but each of the buds have increased their size.

Record 09/018/24/01: Three buds now opened fully.

8/29/01: Photographed Dendrobium buds.

Received "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Orchids" by Pridgeon for my birthday, and found exactly the same looking bloom listed as a Dendrobium "Bigibbum". Will research more, but that's a pretty strong lead.

record 9/01

broken base broken spike 9/20/01: "Forced Division" While moving orchid after misting, I touched the base of the spike and felt it break. Drat. Took my clippers and snipped the remaining strands. (It wouldn't even begin to set back in place.) There was a 1" aerial root which had been working its way down into the leaf below. Against all hope, I have placed the spike into a new 3" square pot and braced it as shown in the right hand photo. As it was a feeding day, I gave it a separate shot of Dyna-Gro with an additional 1/4 tspn of KLN.

General Care:
Location - Generally in highest light areas without sun directly hitting the plant. Usually on the kitchen windowsill (South Facing) until summer sun gets too nasty, then moved onto atrium through July and August. Moved to top of rack when buds began showing.
Medium -
Replanted to Dyna-Rock.
Fertilizer - Standard Orchid Feeding.
Main Watering - Thursday AM
Secondary Watering - Monday AM (if above 90 deg)
Fed with each watering.
Misted heavily each day.
