Orchid
#007 :
Miltonium "Rogue Picardi"
Received as gift from Tracy 9/00. Blooming when received, with a single spike
w/ six purple & white flowers w/ yellow centers.
Held buds through
10/00, as shown in photograph at the left.
4/15/01:
Spike growth evident.
5/5/01: 2 spikes now approx 8 - 10" from center bulb & outside bulb. Arching over, away from sunlight. 4 - 6 buds evident on each.
5/20/01: Buds are now ~1" long, showing purple color stripes. 4 formed buds on each of two spikes, each approximately 12" long.
5/31/01: Last two days extremely hot - high 90's/low 100's. Buds have popped open, although they are not fully opened.
6/18/01: After pretty strong heat, and being away for a couple days, the flowers all went limp. Sprayed and misted and tried to keep cool. Shifted over to Dyna-Grow Gro formula. With steady misting & a little extra watering, they've perked up a bit. They are definitely a little damaged. Also, it seems that the flowers are different this year than the first. The slight color variations are from lighting diffrences.

7/5/01: Some white crusties are evident in the medium and there are brown spots on the underside of a couple leaves. These seem to be the leaves that have been over the kitchen sink, receiving steam in the evening when the dishes are being done.
7/10/01: Top spike flowers have withered. Clipped off top spike. Tips of leaves have gone light brown. Sluiced through with water and will repot Thursday.
7/12/01: Repotted into Dyna-Rok. Roots looked good, but there were a ton of the little white flecks (crusties) throughout the medium. I'm not sure if it was broken down Perlite or something similar. Sprayed Neem Oil on plant crowns and the leaves which had brown flecks on the underside. The blooms actually held up pretty well, considering the heat which they went through. As you can see in the close-ups at left, they definitely look a bit beaten up, but it seems to be mostly heat-induced.
7/18/01: Second spike flowers are whithering. Clipped spike to base.
7/23/01: Two shoots evident from bases of most recent growth. There may be a third as well. Good leaf formation, without wrinkling evident in most recent growth.

There is a more complete Bloom Cycle Chart under construction.
General Care:
Location - South facing windowsill, behind treated glass. Originally above
kitchen sink, but moved away after spotting appearred on leaves.
Medium - bark composite. Did not repot from original medium after first bloom
in '00. Repotted 7/12/01
into same sized container with Dyna-Rok.
Fertilizer - Standard
Orchid Feeding
Main Watering - Thursday AM
Secondary Watering - Monday AM (if above 90 deg)
Fed with each watering.
Misted each morning. Additional spraying of mist directly into the root area
of the plant, as I have read that Miltonia in general like to be a bit moister
than others.
