Orchid #5
Notes & Observations

Photograph at right shows the Phalaenopsis after blooming in October, 2000. I had not yet cut the spike. You can see a larger version of this (and any photos) by clicking on it.

Orchid #005 :
Phalaenopsis w/o tag.

Retrieved from "Pasture" on 7/3/00.
Three leaves, up to 6" x 3" wide. ~20" spike with no buds. Very robust in general, with roots climbing out and over the edge of the 4" round pot.

Winter '00/01 -
Plant had been on southern facing window ledge, receiving direct light through the winter for approximately 1 - 2 hours/day. Clipped the spike about 1/2" above the "seam" of the the lowest bud site, and growth began at that point. There has been withering on the largest leaf (the one facing the window) near the last 2".

2/2/01 -
4 Buds evident on spike.

3/2/01 -
First bloom has opened, with another 4 buds evident. Spike is about 16" long. Had been feeding weekly with Schulz 19-31-17 crystals. Still in south facing windowsill near washing machine.

3/16/01 -
Third leaf now about 3" long. 2 blooms fully opened, with the 3rd about to open. Have been putting into sink on hotter days, so it receives less direct light.

3/27/01 -
Fifth and final bud opening. Delivered to Mom. Buds lasted approximately 2 more weeks.

5/15/01 -
Moved w/ #003 to bathroom. Frosted east-facing window gets morning light, with no direct light falling on the Phal's.

5/31/01 -
Added rock tray underneath, placing Maidenfern between the two Phal's and the window. Misting occurs each morning from showers. Feeding is weekly. With this feeding, now using Dyna-Gro Liquid Grow Formula, using 1/4 tspn for the "Green Can" (~1 gal).

6/3/01 -
Repotted both Phal's using Dyna-Rock(coarse grade). Root conditions on this plant was poor, with a fair amount of rotting in the root system. (#003 was worse off.)

Temperatures through June have been creeping up, with several days in the 90's.

7/19/01 -
Accidentally knocked out of pot. Still very little root growth evident, even though new leaf has continued to grow. Replaced in pot slightly deeper. Decided to check condition of roots after knocking Orchid #003 out of its pot. There was one blackened & rotted main root directly under the plant, but some new growth was evident. It grows slowly...
