  Alfa Romeo GTA/GTV

Race Setup and History

Won 1970 Trans-Am 2.5 Championship

"The Alfa Romeo Giulia coupe and its derivatives-the GT Veloce (GTV), GT Junior, GTA, GTAm, and GTA Junior-has enjoyed one of the most successful racing records of any production car of its era. The Giulia (sounds like "Julia") was an evolution of the 1300 cc Giulietta, the first car Alfa Romeo produced for the post World War II mass market."  Read more about this great marque by clicking the History Link above.

Strong Points

  • The Alfa DOHC Motor is considered a classic that produced the most power per cc in the series.  The GTA used a 1570 cc motor and the GTV used a 1779 cc motor.
  • Strong acceleration, especially in the GTV.

Weak Points

  • Noted for developing extreme understeer.
  • Trans-AM rules required a weight penalty.  This was added as ballast with a 99 lb skidplate under the fuel cell and a 50 lb plate under the engine.
  • Live rear axel (though this does not seem to be much of a problem).

Common Setup

  • 1570, 1779 and 2000 motors were used.
  • 48/52 front to rear weight to help reduce understeer.
  • Common to use aluminum hood and doors in the 2.5 Challenge.
  • Dual Webers
  • Front and rear ventilated brakes.
  • Minilite 15 inch wheels.
