Harold Ford Jr.

ANN COULTER: "Harold Ford is one of my favorite Democrats.." (Kudlow & Co.)

Why should "Progressive" Democrats support Harold Ford Jr?  He has supported almost every major Bush/GOP legislation!  If you think Harold Ford Jr. and his "centrist" Democrats will take control of Congress and impeach Bush you are mistaken.  Centrist/conservative Democrats like Harold Ford Jr. and Joseph Lieberman have supported the illegal Bush War and occupation of Iraq and the Republican attacks on the civil rights of American citizens.

On Sept. 30, 2004, Rep. Harold Ford Jr. reversed prior position statements and voted for the anti-gay "Federal Marriage Amendment" (H.J. Resolution 56), which would amend the U.S. Constitution to prohibit states from allowing gay and lesbian couples to enjoy the legal rights of marriage.  Because Rep. Ford  has voted against gay and lesbian civil rights, because he has voted with opponents of gay and lesbian equality, and because he voted against the position of the Democratic Party and its Presidential Candidate John Kerry, I decided to oppose him as a write-in candidate in the Nov. 2, 2004 election and in the Aug. 3 Democratic Primary.

While Rep. Ford has consistently opposed gay marriage, he has also taken the position of John Kerry and the Democratic Party that it is wrong and unnecessary to amend the U.S. Constitution to block the right of states to allow gays and lesbians to marry--until Sept. 30, 2004 when he caved in to a campaign of intolerance waged by anti-gay churches and clergy in Memphis.  I and many other gay and lesbian supporters of Harold Ford Jr. were very disappointed with his betrayal.

This is not the first time he has endorsed conservative positions.  He has supported President Bush's "Faith-based Initiatives" which violate the First Amendment's anti-establishment clause and the constitutional separation of church and state.  He supported the Iraq War and wasteful military spending.  I have decided that I can no longer support him or vote for him and believe that voters deserve a better choice, someone who stands up for his beliefs and principles, defends civil rights, equality and social justice for all, and supports the separation of church and state.

It is now clear that Harold Ford Jr. crossed party lines and voted for the anti-gay Federal Marriage Amendment in anticipation of running for the U.S. Sentate 2006.  His campaign for the Senate has emphasized his vote for the anti-gay Federal Marriage Amendment and his opposition to gay marriage, as well as his votes to restrict the right of women to abortion, and he has indicated that he supports some version of the Republican plan to "privatize" Social Security, as he has supported much of the Bush Admnistration's conservative policies.

Progressive Democrats must challenge Harold Ford Jr. and the "centrist" Democratic Party establishment that supported

him.  By continuing to vote for their "centrist" (conservative) candidates we are agreeing with their argument that only conservative ideas can win elections, and we are thus supporting those conservative ideas! Why?  Why reward their anti-gay, anti-progressive, conservative political actions?? Why ? Why? Why?  No one seems to have a good answer or justification, except to "win"?  Win what? Is caving in to the right-wing winnning??   And consider the damage to the progressive democrats IF HFJr  is elected to the Senate: we will have another Republican ass-licking DINO (Democrat in Name Only) in the Senate for decades, thrwarting progressive democratic legislation (universal health insurance, gay rights, separation of church and state, etc.)  It's not worth it!  Keep Ford OUT of the Senate now!

For these reasons Isupported the REAL progressive in for the U.S. Senate from Tennessee: Green Party Candidate Chris Lugo for Senate!  And if Harold Ford Jr. runs for the Senate again in 2008, I will support the Green Party candidate again!

It looks like HFJ may become the next Chair of the conservative Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), but even the DLC called politicians like HFJ who supported the anti-gay Federal Marriage Amendment "cynical and desperate."  Criticizing Bush and the GOP for pushing the anti-gay amendment in an election, the DLC stated in 2004, "This tactic is socially divisive, morally questionable, and politically dangerous."  So why would they want HFJ to be their leader?

Harold Ford Jr.s Conservative Record:
Supported Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq
Supported GOP tax cuts for the wealthy
Supported corporate anti-consumer bankruptcy law
Supported some privitization of Social Security
Supports GOP plan to cut estate taxes on wealthy families
Supports conservative "faith-based" federal tax give a ways to churches
Does not defend the separation of Church and State, Supports Christian Right's Theocratic Agenda
Voted for GOP and anti-gay Christian Right's "Federal Marriage Amendment" to write discrimination against gays and lesbians into the U.S. Constitution TWICE!

Why Harold Ford Is A Threat to the Democratic Party

Time and again, Rep. Harold Ford Jr. has crossed party lines, along with the same 30+ conservative Democrats in the House, and supprted the Bush Administration and Republican policies!

In 2004, Harold Ford Jr. pledged to LGBT Democrats in Memphis that he intended to vote AGAINST the Republican anti-marriage amendment.  He cited his support off the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), signed into law by President Bill Clinton, which made amending the Constitution unnecessary, and that the issue should be left to the states.  Two days later, he broke his word by voting with the Republicans for it.  In July 2006, he joined with 202 Republicans and 34 House Democrats to support the Republican anti-marriage amendment again.  He has made his support for the federal marriage amendment--and a similar amendment to the Tennessee Constiution--a centerpiece of his Senate campaign.

While DNC Chair Howard Dean and other Democratic leaders have condemned the Republican Party's attacks on gays and lesbians for political gain, HAROLD FORD JR. HAS SIDED WITH THE REPUBLICAN PARTY (Again!)

Harold Ford Jr.

"I will continue to be pro-family, including supporting a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, without taking away the civil rights of gays and lesbians."

Harold Ford Jr., "My Faith as My Guide" on

According to Harold Ford Jr. marriage is NOT a civil right!  This is the same position as George Bush, the Republican Party, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, etc...

Julian Bond, Civil Rights Leader

"I see this as a civil rights issue.
That means I support gay civil marriage."

(News Release, NBJC, 2/2/04)

Rep.  John Lewis (D-GA, Civil Rights Hero)

"It is time to say forthrightly that the government's exclusion of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters from civil marriage officially degrades them and their families.  It denies them the basic human right to marry the person they love.  It denies them numerous legal protections for their families.  This discrimination is wrong...I've heard the reasons for opposing civil marriage for same-sex couples.  Cut through the distractions, and they stink of the same fear, hatred, and intolerance I have known in racism and in bigotry." (Boston Globe, 11/25/03)

Rev. Joseh Lowery, Civil Rights Leader

"When you talk about the law discriminating, the law granting a privilege here, and a denying it there, that's a civil rights issue.  And I can't take it away from anybody." (ABC News, 3/13/04)

Carol Moseley Braun

"I believe this is a civil rights issue...It seems to me that if people want to marry a person of a different race that's no diffferent than somebody wanting to marry someone of the same sex." (Democratic Debates, Des Moines 11/24/03)

Rev. Peter Gomes, Havard University Chaplain

"To extend the civil right of marrriage to homosexuals will  neither solve nor complicate the problems already inherent in marriage, but what it will do is permit a whole class of persons, our fellow citizens under the law heretofore irrationally deprived of a civil right, both to benefit from and participate in a valuable, yet vulnerable institution which in our changing society needs all the help it can get." (Boston Globe, 2/4/04)

Coretta Scott King, Civil Rights Leader

"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the civil rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.'  I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brother-and sisterhod for lesbian and gay people." (Reuters, 3/3/98)

Democratic Party (DNC):

""We Support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families."

We repudiate Bush's divisive effort to politicize the Constitution by pursuing the "Federal Marriage Amendment."

Howard Dean, Chair of the DNC:

"As Democrats we believe that every American has a right to equal protection under the law and to live in dignity.  And we must respect the right of every family to live in dignity with equal rights, responsibilities and protections under the law." (July 6, 2006)

"The Constitution was written to guarantee basic rights to all Americans, not deny them to some. ..The GOP touts 'family values,' while Democrats value all families." (June 2, 2006, National Stonewall Democrats Convention)
