June Stephens Martsolf

was born in Prince Rupert, B.C., but was raised in the Seattle area until she was 17 when her family moved to Santa Cruz,
CA.. She went on to U.C.Berkeley where she obtained an AB in Fine Arts, and continued painting(giving classes, working on
her own and taking classes from Karl Kasten, Earl Pierce, Lundy Siegrist, Pam Glover, Al Currier and others) the rest of her
life. She has done much in Abstract Expressionism and Impressionist figure work, though in the late 80's she really got excited
with Plein Air Landscape painting and started painting outdoors with friends in the East Bay of No. CA. (Plein Air means painting
outdoors).
She works quickly with strong sweeping, broad brush strokes, and thick paint (sometimes straight from the tube). It is
important to work quickly because the light and the colors are changing with the movement of the sun. She has, of course,
been deeply inspired by the Impressionists (who painted in the late 19th century), especially Monet, Van Gogh and Cezanne.
The Impressionists & Post Impressionists were the best known Plein Air painters. But her most recent influence has been
the paintings of Tom Thomson, who greatly influenced the Canadian Group of Seven& who formed a group of like minded Plein
Air painters in Toronto about 1915.
The summer of 2004 saw her beginning to work in a new media, acrylic. She lived in CA. until 1993 when she moved to Blaine,
WA. While there she was also influenced greatly by the California Figurists of the Bay Area, and the Society of Six, a group
of Bay Area painters formed at the same time as the Group of Seven.
June and her husband, Jack, live in Semiahmoo (Blaine, WA). Their three sons, and two grandsons live in California. She
has exhibited and won awards both in California and in Washington. Tel: (360)371-0446 - 9134 Wigeon Ct., Blaine, WA. 98230
