Jill's Squirrel Nest

Welcome to my homepage on the World Wide Web! I'm glad you stopped by. The year 2001 was a fun year with my rehabilitating my two orphaned squirrels Peanut and Cashew (above). The year 2002 has even been more interesting with Cashew becoming a mommy at the end of March. She has three of the most adorable female squirrels. They are just starting to venture out of the nest box, and I get a kick out of them - great entertainment to watch while washing dishes!
I also am in the process of including some links to some of my favorite Web sites. Feel free to browse around, and stop back often to see what has been added!

"And the fox said to the little prince: 'Men have forgotten this truth. But you must never forget it. You become responsible forever, for what you have tamed.' "
- Antoine De Saint-Exupery

To this day, Peanut and Cashew still come every day to "hang out" (actually to get their daily rations of nuts). We've ended up with many other "visitors," some of whom we have named Bernie, Nutkin and Tuffy. At any given moment, we will have no squirrels in the yard or as many as eight!
Of course, this has started off a "war" of sorts with our neighbor behind us who has started trapping the squirrels and taking them away. My kids and I pleaded with him to let us see them before he ships them off, especially since Cashew has some babies to take care of! And I believe Peanut may have been injured while escaping the trap at some point. One of his rear legs seems to be hurt. This all causes much consternation, but I believe they will be safe.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
- Dr. Seuss

Here are my squirrels in the nest box we built for them. It has a door that opens to clean out the box if needed, a small hole for them to come and go and a platform on top - a necessity for squirrels to "take to" the box. This was one of their first nights in the box - sometime in the middle of October (roughly 15 weeks old). The two of them still inhabit the box every night, and if I'm up early enough I can watch them arise in the morning.
