Judy is an SF Fan
- Summer, 1962
- I discover my dad's science fiction collection, including
The Best of Astounding.
- Summer, 1967
- My Summer of Hobbits. I didn't get to have a summer of
love in San Francisco, but I did discover Tolkien while
spending the summer in West Texas.
- December, 1967
- I give my dad an Analog subscription for
Christmas. Since I get home from school before he gets
home from work, I usually get to read them first.
- September, 1971
- I discover Dune the night before my first
Chemistry test at Rice University. I stay up until 2 am
finishing it. I still (barely) made an A.
- September, 1975
- I earn college credit for reading science fiction. I
realize that much of Best of Astounding made it
into the Best of Science Fiction anthologies.
- Feb, 1986
- I attend my first convention, a Star Trek Con in Raleigh,
N.C.
-
- Sept. 1995
- My friend Carol Phillips introduces me to filking. My
teens and I learn a lot of Star Trek Filk, including 7
versions of "Banned from Argo."
- Nov. 1996
- I attend OryCon 18, my first out of town (and West Coast) big CON. I
meet some fabulous filkers, like Jeff Hitchin, Celia Eng, and Heather Alexander
I join the northwest filk
mailing list. Join by putting subscribe filk in the body of mail to majordomo@dragoncat.net
- Martin Luther King Weekend, 1997
- Ben, Susan and I attend RustyCon 14, in Tacoma, Washington. Ben and Susan get to meet Celia and Jeff. We all get to hear Anne Prather and are blown away! Many people confuse me with my fellow Rice alumna, Elizabeth Moon, the guest of honor. I guess they didn't think two different middle aged women from Texas would go as far as Tacoma to attend a con!
- Easter Weekend, 1997
- Carol Phillips, Ben, Susan, Keegan (Carrol's toddler) and I all attend NorwesCon 20. Susan becomes a gopher, and has her volunteer's vest, signed by Larry Niven and Dr. Robert Forward, still. We get to hear Dr. Jane Robinson filk. And Jeff had new songs. It was great filking.
- Labor Day Weekend, 1997
- LoneStarCon2, 1997 World Con in San Antonio. I
attend my first World Con. And Carol and I win a Hall
Costume Award. And I meet many big name filkers like Leslie Fish, Kathy Mar, Jordan Kare, Lynn Gold, Lee Gold, Harold Feld, Gary Erlich, and Syntax (Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff) filk. LoneStar2 was so exciting, that we're going to BucConeer, Baltimore, 1998, and ChiCon2000, Chicago, 2000
- March 6 -8, 1998
- I attend Consonance, my first filk con. We meet even more big name filkers. Barry & Sally Childs-Helton, and Rand and Alan of Ookla the Mok There were so many good panels, so many good concerts. A folk jam, a rock jam, a Celtic jam. I like it so much that I've decided to go to OVFF (Ohio Valley Filk Fest) and other filking
cons.
- Mar 28, 1998
- Susan and I drive from Columbus, GA to Atlanta to attend the March GaFiA house filk at the home of Michael Liebmann. We had a good time, heard some virgin filk, heard some old standards and best of all, met some very nice folks. We were so impressed that we bought 3 memberships for GaFilk 1. This was my first house filk, and I liked it so much, that I've decided that I will host a house filk myself. Stay tuned!
- May 1998
- I hold my first house filk and like it so much that I decide to have more of them.
- Oct 1998
- I attend ConText and OVFF, spending two weekends in a row in Columbus OH and meet many other big name filkers including Juanita Coulson, Tom Smith, and Michael Longcor, Bill and Brenda Sutton, just too many to name. Then I come home and meet David Norris through match.com. Of course, I introduce him to filking right away.
- Nov 1998
- I spoil David Norris by taking him to OryCon as his first SF con. We get to listen to lots of filk about Miles Vorkorsigan, and meet the GOH, Lois McMaster Bujold.
- Dec 30, 1998
- First Entropy House Filk introduces David to filkers enmasse, at his own home
- Jan 1999
- GA FILK 1 -- where Lee Billings and I discover we had to go to Atlanta to be introduced, even though we'd met each other in Houston just 3 weeks before.
- Mar 1999
- My second Consonance, and I make most of the Friday night concerts this time. And then there is the "Bend Over Greek Sailor" fundraising shtick. Marvelous.
- May 28 - 30, 1999
- I T I C 2 -- I show up at I Think, Therefore I Con 2 to filk, and discover V LARP. Yes, Vampire Live Action Roleplaying. The Camarilla, and I am entranced. The entire Entropy Hive is entranced. And I get some of the larpers to filk afterward
- Sep 9, 1999
- Camarilla subsumes filking. I become a chapter coordinator in the Cam. I never seem to have a weekend free, and put house filks on hiatus. But manage to sometimes filk in character.
- Sep 30, 2000
- Return of the House Filk. We need to start doing Honor Harrington filks to get ready for David Weber, GOH at Consortium
- Filking
- I love singer/songwriter music. I love showtunes. I love
science fiction and fantasy. And filking shows that I'm
not alone in combining these interests. What is filk, anyway? There are different definitions, but I like Filk = Folk for round values of 'i' or thin values of 'o'. But Interfilk has several different versions all handily arranged on one page. Yahoo classifies it as a novelty music genre. Surf on over to the Virtual Filksing and listen! I highly recommend Jane Mailander's Filking 101 for getting neo's up to speed quickly. To stay up to date, read the Usenet newsgroup, rec.music.filk
- Costuming
- Costuming is a fun part of the convention experience. And
my friend Carol is very innovative. And it's a real ice
breaker to run around with a plastic flamingo on one's
head. We're currently working on coustumes and a filk song based on Niven and Pournelle'sFootfall
- Literature
- I like to read Russian novels, mysteries, and history as
well as science fiction and fantasy. My current reading list includes Walter Miller's Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman, Tom Holt's Who's Afraid of Beowulf?and Antonia Frasier's biography of Charles II.
- Media
- Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Outer Limits, Twilight
Zone, 2001, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Fantastic
Planet -- these are multi-media experiences, often as
moving as opera, and are shaping the myths and values of
this society. By this time you should realize that this whole page is tongue in cheek. :-)
Oh, yes, speaking of opera, The Fifth Element is opera!
