Tip of the Month
"When fighting the fish, angle the rod down stream to maintain a good hookset and to direct the fish towards your side of the river.”

Updated: 12/19/05
This year (2005) proved to be a busy year and I didn't get even get close to "outside the ball park" as far as the number of flyfishing outings. My brother and I only managed to get out to fish twice this year. However, these were top-notch quality flyfishing trips. First, in June, we fished the the North Platte River, Madison River, DePuy Spring Creek in Livingston, Montana, and the creme de la creme of tailwater combat fly fishing: The Big Horn (stories will be forthcoming). Then, the day after Thanksgiving, we did a short trip to the San Juan River and we netted spectacular results. I was going to place one of our fish on the cover, but I just had to go with the picture perfect shot of Jude Duran holding a San Juan Giant!

Site News as of 12/19/05
I added a Weather Sticker® from wunderground.com. This should prove useful in planning trips to the SJ or elesewhere; and I posted a few more photos in the Latest Journal Update. I've also added the "Angler's Attic," a new section that archives the tips from Tip of the Month section. In the future, I will store other useful information in the Attic. Stay tuned for Frank Garcia's article about our journey to the Big Horn. I hope you take a little time for yourself and enjoy a story or two from the Northern New Mexico Flyfishing Journal.

Welcome
Family and friends; welcome to the Northern New Mexico Fly Fishing Journal. I'm glad you stopped by. You'll find short stories describing fishing trips to various streams and rivers in northern New Mexico and, on occasion, southern Colorado and other flyfishing destinations. At a minimum, you'll find the latest entry in the journal by clicking on the java enabled "quick link" to the upper right. Or, review the "journal entry" links on the navigation bar to the upper left to read flyfishing stories as far back as 2002. I've also included links to some of my favorite local fly fishing Web sites. Feel free to browse around, and enjoy your visit!
"Why a website primarily focused on a fly fishing journal?"
I was inspired by my brother, Frank Garcia, who started maintaining a fly fishing journal as a way to document the conditions (weather, water temperature, etc.) and results of each trip. You see, we found ourselves, each year, wondering, "What fly did we use last year on this strectch of water?" Or, "I think the hatch occured the second week in April, or was it the last week?" Its a shame to lose that kind of valuable information; especially for an angler. So, I also began keeping a journal, a web journal . . . besides being a gratifying way of reliving the days's events, a web journal allows one to easily share it with others and it is a valuable tool to help one follow the evolution of a stream and maintain flyfishing knowledge that may prove useful in the following years.
