The Day Nick Lost His Smile

One morning, bright and early, Nick woke up feeling kind of grumpy.  His mouth turned down and he did not have any happy thoughts.   As Nick went down for breakfast all the lines in his face were turned down.   They were so turned down that Nick’s smile had nothing to hang on to.

Then when no one was looking Nick’s smile started slipping off Nick’s face.  "OOPS!" said Nick’s smile as it slid right off his sad face and landed in his shirt pocket.  Since Nick’s smile was a happy sort, it was not long before it felt all warm and cozy in that pocket and soon fell fast asleep.

Nick did not notice that his smile was gone until he began feeling better after breakfast.  He looked into the bathroom mirror to comb his hair and saw his grumpy face staring back at him.  There was no smile. "Where is my smile?", said Nick.

Nick’s smile was fast asleep in his pocket and did not hear him. Nick began to worry that he would never be able to smile again.   "Where is my smile?", he said again. Not finding his smile made Nick feel so bad that he began to cry.  No one saw Nick cry there in the bathroom, but some big tears began to roll down his face.

One of those tears dropped off Nick’s cheek and landed right on the smile in his pocket.  SPLASH went the tear as it landed and Nick’s smile woke up to hear Nick ask again, "Where is my smile?".   "I’m in your pocket, Nick." said the smile, "I must have fallen asleep."

"I am sorry I woke up grumpy.", said Nick as his smile climbed out of his pocket.  While he was still looking in the mirror Nick’s smile came back to his face.  "Wow!", said Nick, "I better wake up happy so I don’t lose my smile ever again."

After that, every time Nick woke up grumpy he remembered that day and then he quickly smiled so that his smile would never slide off his face again.
