return  > - Internet Explorer 6 - install

OK, I got the Total Access 2003 software CD.  How do I install IE 6?

The latest IE version is 6.x.  It closes many security holes and provides the latest features to enhance your browsing on the Internet.  The IE 6.0.2600.0 software is included on the Total Access 2003 CD.  Just follow the following steps to install IE 6:

  • Insert the TA CD in your CD drive and wait for the TA install to begin
  • At the first opportunity, cancel the install process
  • Click on "My Computer" on your desktop
  • Right-click on the CD drive icon and select "Explore" or "Browse"
  • Windows Explorer will display the directories and files on the CD
  • Click on the "Windows" folder
  • Click on the "Msie" folder
    • To save a copy of these files on your HD:
      • Select all files (Ctrl/A) and right click on them
      • Select "Copy"
      • Browse to your "C:\" drive and highlight it
      • Click on the "File" dropdown menu and select "New..."
      • Click on "Folder"
      • Name the new folder "CD-InternetExplorer6"
      • Right click on that folder and select "Paste"
      • Click on the CD-InternetExplorer6 folder
  • Click on the "ie6setup.exe" file (located about half way down)
  • Click on the "I Accept the Agreement" radio button
  • Click on the "Next" button
  • You will be given some choices (next 3 paragraphs are from "Help" in the install):

If you choose "Install Now" - Typical set of components, Setup installs the browser and the typical components you need to view Web pages. If you are running Setup through an Internet service provider (ISP) or from a corporate intranet, the network administrator might include additional components recommended or needed for your Internet services.

If you choose "Install Minimal", or "Customize your browser", Setup displays a screen at which you can change where Internet Explorer and Internet Tools will be installed, choose which components to install, and read descriptions of each component.

If you later need additional components in order to view or display Web items, you will be prompted to download the components when they are needed. You can also install additional components whenever you want to without reinstalling all of Internet Explorer and Internet Tools.

My display (with IE 5.5 already installed and Windows 98 se) shows: "Install Now - Minimal set of components" and "Customize your browser (6 to 45MB)".  I selected "Install Now . . ."

  • Click the "Next" button
  • . . . [I chose not to continue with the install based on the following]

    CNET review
    (8/27/01)
    By Rex Baldazo
At the height of the browser war between Microsoft and Netscape, the competing companies released new browser versions one after another. Recently, the war has been downgraded to a minor skirmish. It's been almost a year since Netscape released version 6 of its browser, and Microsoft is only now shipping Internet Explorer 6. Unlike Netscape 6, however (and its update, the much improved 6.1), IE 6 is not a complete overhaul. This incremental upgrade offers just enough new gizmos--including improved privacy features--to keep an IE user from switching to Netscape 6.x, but its interface remains relatively unchanged. Just about the only reason we can figure that it even deserves the full 6 version number is its release in conjunction with Windows XP. For those of you not upgrading to Windows XP, whether you run IE 5.x or Netscape 6.x, there's no need to rush for this download.
  • There is more needed here to complete the install instructions . . .  Proceed at your own choice.

You will want to check immediately for updates - especially Service Pack 1 (SP1).   This is also FREE and found at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp .

I hope this helps making IE more pleasant to use.
