GILBERTS IN THE USA

It appears that a large group of the Gilbert family moved from Sussex to Illinois around 1851 (initially to New York, then to Verona, Grundy County, about 60 miles southwest of Chicago). By around 1915 the majority of the family were living in Luverne, Rock County, Minnesota, and they were farming there for two generations. Subsequently descendants lived in Hastings, Nebraska (1947), Berea, Ohio (1951), Aberdeen WA (1980) and Marshfield, Wisconsin (1981). Now they live in Eugene, Oregon. The original immigrants would seem to be as follows;

• George L.Gilbert (31 Jan 1832 Heathfield -1 Sept 1908 Verona, Illinois) = Sara Carrick (in 1863, Illinois). 10 children, Marriam, Thomas J., Jennie, Mary and Augusta and five others who died young.
• Naomi Gilbert (14 Sep 1834 Heathfield - 23 Aug 1916 Grundy County, Illinois) = George Samuel Fellingham * (7 Jul 1812, Suffolk, England - 20 May 1890 Morris, Grundy Co., IL) around 1857 (his 2nd wife) in Illinois (he was the brother of William Fellingham who married Mary Gilbert above). Seven children.
• Lois Gilbert (25 Nov 1836 Heathfield - 4 Feb 1914) = Osborn Holbrook in USA.
• William Gilbert (17 Mar 1840 Heathfield, Sussex -1 Mar 1928 Los Angeles) = Anna Rumney  (8 Feb 1845 Kent, England - 2 Jul 1921 Luverne MN). Three children, Permelia Mercy, Robert Rumney and Lillian Anna.
